Invasion of Little Aliens

Morning circle was all about letters.  We have almost introduced every letter of the alphabet!!  We talked about the letter names, letter sounds, and name as many things as we can think of that start with that letter.  We have some fun activities (that we "borrowed" from Ms. Michelle) to help us drill the letters these last few weeks of school!

Ms. Abby came today and it was a beautiful day to be outside.  It was definitely a different experience than our usual frigid, freezing fingers, teeth chattering session.  The goal of the day was throwing and catching.  First, each child tossed a bean bag with a partner.  There was a definite learning curve to this activity!  There was LOTS of laughing....and some celebrating when an actual catch was made!  Then all the kids rotated through throwing centers.  The first center was tossing two bean bags into a hula hoop.  The second center was tossing two bean bags into a bucket.  The third center was a Velcro bulls eye target.  Before we finished up, Ms. Abby got out the parachute and we practiced bouncing a ball around on top.  The object, of course, was to keep the ball ON the parachute.....but it was certainly more entertaining for the children to watch the teachers run around the courtyard and get it!  The parachute was certainly the favorite of the day!

Today's book was Another Day in the Milky Way by David Milgrim.  In the story, Monty's world seems a little different this morning. For one thing, he can't help noticing his mother suddenly has three heads. And is serving liver flakes for breakfast. Then there are the unusual animals he encounters, who all seem to be talking and . . . wearing costumes? There's no way around it?  Monty has definitely woken up on the wrong planet.  The problem is, he has no idea how to get home. He needs advice. But from whom? The scatterbrained donkey? The no-nonsense ant? Or the old man on the mountaintop?

After the story, we made a list of all the things from the book that were different than Earth.  The kids decided that they would NOT want to live on this other planet.....mostly because they didn't want to drink fish for breakfast.  They did all agree that it would be kinda cool for Moms to have three heads and Dads to have three legs and four arms.....at least for a day or so!!

For art, we made alien hats.  The kids had so much fun with this activity!  They enjoyed coloring their hats and adding all the eyes.  There was some serious table conversation about which planet these little aliens would be traveling to and who exactly would be driving the rocket ship!

We took advantage of the warm afternoon and went to the park to play for a little bit.  The kids love the change in scenery.....and this time we took our lunches for a picnic!  The kids all ran around and played, but were ready for a break by the time we stopped for lunch.  We played a little more after lunch, and then headed back to school for dismissal.  By then.....they were all hot and sweaty!  The walk back to school took twice as long as the walk to the park!  We sent home some tired little aliens today....but the weather was just too nice to miss!
