All About Our Flag

The goal for the day was to learn who the President of the United States is, what colors are in our flag, and to learn that we all live in Charlotte, North Carolina.  I think they did a great job!  We reviewed and practiced and talked about it all day.  The children shared things that they knew about the election and voting, and we tried to stay as bipartisan as possible!!  Political views aside.....at least Obama has an easy name for the kids to say!! 

Ms. Abby came today and we continued learning about soccer.  We dribbled the ball, kicked the ball, stopped the ball, trapped the ball, and today.....running and kicking.  The kids partnered up with another friend to kick to and then took turns stopping the ball.  Then everyone got a chance to take a running start to kick the ball into the goal.  I was so proud of how well the kids listened and took turns.  They cheer each other on and are starting to use the correct soccer vocabulary. They really LOVE Ms. Abby and her activities.

Our story today was Max for President by Jarrett Krosoczka.  This is a story about a boy named Max who wants to be class president.  But....so does a girl named Kelly!  They both hang up signs and hand out buttons.  They both make promises to their friends so that people will vote for them.  In the end Kelly wins, but she chooses Max to be her vice president.  They work together to make all their promises come true.  All throughout the story we had to ignore cries of "I want to be our class president!" and "Will you vote for me?".  I don't think the kids ever considered that they could be PRESIDENT of anything and the story opened up a whole new world of possibilities!

 

Art today was making American flags.  We watched the cute video that taught us some really cool facts about our flag and then we got to work.  During our project, we had to take some time to learn about patterns so that our stripes would be in the right order.  The kids all caught on right away.  They worked so hard to make sure that everything turned out just like the sample.  We answered questions about where Obama lives and who is in his family.  They were very inquisitive about this man we were calling the "President"!

I apologize that even though the election has ended, we are continuing with the political conversations!  You children are very interested and LOVE that this topic is something that they have seen on TV and moms and dads are talking about at home!  Who knows.....maybe there's a future president among us now.....there are certainly some strong negotiators!!
