All About Rainbows

The Touch and Feel today was full of colorful Fruit Loops.  Now, I must admit that I ate this cereal as a kid, but after seeing all the sugar residue on the kids hands and in the pool.....I can't imagine that the company is still in business!  And to think that some kids start their day eating this sugary concoction!  The kids sure enjoyed smelling the cereal and searching out specific colors.  They made patterns and tried to look through the middle of the circles.  It was fun times at the pool this morning!

Ms. Michelle was here today.  She had a team race set up for the kids.  We divided into blue team and yellow team.  While one person from each team rode the scooter board on their tummies around the room in search of hidden Easter eggs, the other team members had to bounce a balloon back and forth using these net circles.  Once all the eggs were in the matching colored baskets, we all gathered in a circle to open the eggs.  The kids had already discovered that there was a surprise inside the eggs and were anxious to find out what it could be.  It was our finger fun for the day!  Little beads that connect together to make longer strips.  It took some dedication to snap those things together.....but in the end the kids had made bracelets, rings, and anklets!  One trip inside the long, blue tunnel and we were on our way outside.

The book today was The Leprechaun Who Lost His Rainbow by Sean Callahan.  A leprechaun appears and asks Colleen's help in saving the St. Patrick's Day Parade.  He can't seem to find the colors of his rainbow.  She offers items of different colors to rebuild his lost rainbow.  The kids loved guessing what items Colleen would donate to the leprechaun's hat to make the rainbow.  We learned that there are two very important things that we need to make a rainbow.....water (sometimes rain) and sun. 




After watching Sid the Science Kid demonstrate, we headed outside for some serious science.  We had to search for the garden hose, but when we found it and turned the water on.....the kids all knew this was going to be fun.  I'm not certain they actually saw the rainbow colors that Tiffany and I were pointing out.....the water shooting out across the parking lot sure was distracting and fun to watch!  They were all laughing so hard and giving directions about my water projection.....the actual purpose of the experiment may have gotten lost.  BUT....that's why we watched Sid do it first!  I guess you forget how much fun a garden hose can be to a kid!

Art was all about matching colors and concentrating.  The kids did a wonderful job using the Fruit Loops to create their very own rainbows.  We made a huge mess in the classroom.  Fruit Loops were getting knocked off the tables and stepped on in the floor.....but you know our motto.....if it's messy, it's probably fun!  Surprisingly, this activity was fairly independent for all the kids.  They only needed help with the gluing.  Everyone worked hard and completed the rainbow.  Sorry if you find Fruit Loops all over the house and car for the next few days.....I'm sure we'll be finding them in the classroom too!
