Learning About Wind

The Touch and Feel pool was filled with feathers this morning. They were not heavy...we could blow them around the pool with the air from our mouths. The kids came up with this idea all on their own....which fit perfectly with the topic that we were learning about!  They are such good examples!!  The kids took turns calling out different colors and had their friends search for a match.

During our morning circle we continued started a new pattern on the calendar. This one is a little more complex, but they picked it up right away.  We started a new month and the kids were excited to tell me all that they knew about March!  We talked about the weather outside. It was cold, cloudy and rainy. Then we focused on letters and letter sounds.

 



Our story today was Wind by Marion Bauer. The book described the different things that need wind...a kite, sailboat, pinwheel. We learned that winds blows the leaves and spreads flower seeds. Wind can also be very strong and make tornadoes and hurricanes. It can also cool us off on a really hot day.  After reading the story we talked about objects that were heavy (they weighed a lot and they wouldn't blow away in the wind) and objects that were not heavy (we could pick them up and they would blow away in the wind).

 

 

For science, we did a mini-experiment to see what objects the "wind" would blow. But....since we were inside the classroom.....wind wasn't readily available.  We needed some manufactured "wind"!  A hair dryer did just the trick.....and brought LOTS of smiles to the kids faces!  The kids made predictions about cotton balls, a car, a block and paper. After making our predictions we tested the objects with the wind from a hair dryer to see what objects would blow away. The cotton balls and paper blew away but the car and block did not blow away.

 

 

Finally, we had one more treat in store for the kiddos!  We made Wind Art!  We wanted to see how wind would make one more thing move...PAINT! The kids spread red, yellow and blue paint around their paper. Then they used the wind from the blow dryer to move, spread and mix the paint. It made some really cool designs and we could actually see the wind blowing the paint. Although it was kinda noisy art....it was clear that the kids enjoyed themselves.....and....a first for us....we didn't even get messy!
