Where's My Shadow?

Today Ms. Abby came to play with us! The kids did a shuttle race. First they had to run one ball down to the colored dot, then come back and get the second ball and take it to the colored dot and finally they had to bring both balls back to the start line.  We raced against a partner from the TK classroom.  They end up helping each other, waiting for each other so they can finish together, and, of course, cheering each other on.  It's not very competitive.....but they sure have a great time!

Next the kids practiced running the bases for baseball. They started at home plate and ran to first, second, third and then back home. The last activity was playing t-ball. The kids each took a turn hitting the baseball of the tee and then running all four bases!  We've got some big hitters in our classroom!  Definite scholarship potential!!!

Our story today was " Bear Shadow" by Frank Asch. Bear tries everything to get rid of his shadow. He tried to nail it down, cover it with dirt and lock it inside. Bear learned that he couldn't get rid of his shadow...so they should try and work together!

 

After reading the story the kids talked about where our shades can be found. Sometimes we see them in front of us, sometimes they are behind us, and other times they are beside/next to us. We talked about where we find our shadow depends on where the sun is shining.  The kids practiced using these positions words and had to identify different objects or people in each of these positions.

We went to the park for science and outside play time. On our way we looked for shadows. We saw the shadow of cars, a garbage trunk, a fence, trees, birds and the street signs. As we walked, we watched our shadows move from behind us, to beside us to in front of us.

For science the kids worked in partners to trace their shadows. It was harder than it looked. The kids had the wiggles and it was hard for the kids AND their shadows to stay still. The arms and legs were especially tricky!  Each kid had a chance to have their shadow traced, and to trace a friends shadow.  The kids wrote their names beside their tracing so that we could tell the "shadow people" apart.  They didn't quite understand leaving them behind in the park.....they wanted to take their shadows with them, so that took a little explaining.  No worries....we all made it back to school safe....with our shadows in tow!
