Kite Day

Today was a VERY windy day...perfect for flying a kite! We couldn't have planned it any better!!  As always, we started our day with our morning circle. We continued our patten on the calendar, practiced spelling the months of the year and reviewed our letters and letter sounds.  The kids are learning important holidays that go with each month....including, of course, each other's birthdays!

Our story today was "Kite Day" by Will Hillenbrand. On a windy spring day, Bear and Mole decide to fly a kite! But first they have to build one. They design, measure, and finally construct their kite. With a zoom, zoom, zoom the kite soars up, up, up in the air. But when a storm rumbles in --SNAP!--the kite string breaks! The chase is on as the two friends run after their kite and find it in a tree, protecting a nest of baby birds from the rain.



After reading the story we talked about winter and spring. The kids sorted pictures and listed different activities that pepole would do in winter (snow ball fight, build a snow man, go sledding, wear mittens) and ones that they would do in the spring (plant flowers, fly a kite, go for walks in the park, play outside).  That all gets kinda confusing here in North Carolina where the weather is super unpredictable.....but we did the best we could to explain it all!

 For art the kids each designed and made a kite. They had to color the kite, follow directions to fold the paper, and helped tie a knot for the string to hold their kite. After the kites were completed it was time to go outside and test them out! The kids ran around the courtyard smiling and laughing as their kites flew in the air. It was a great day for kites!  Those little kites were flying in all different directions!  Now....we did have some casualities of the commotion!  Kites stuck in a tree....kites that lost their string.....kites that flew away!  It was SOOO much fun!  We also had a big class kite that we attempted to fly. By this time the kids were freezing....and starting to lose interest!  When it gets warmer outside we will bring the big kites to the park so everyone can have a turn flying it!
