Making Clouds

Clouds! Clouds! Clouds!  The Touch and Feel was full of "cloud-like" material.  We talked about the color, the feeling, and the weight of the material.  The kids formed it into different shapes and we brainstormed about how we might use it.  Just for the record....the mystery "cloud" material was quilt batting!

The book today was Clouds by Marion Bauer.  This informative text told us about three different kinds of clouds and how to tell the difference between all three.  They all look very different.  It also introduced us to the concept of the water cycle. 



After the book, Ms. Sarah told us a story about two water droplets named Stan and Fran.  They started out in the ocean, but when the sun became very hot, they evaporated up to the sky.  The huddled together in a cloud, but the cloud wasn't strong enough to hold all the drops of water.  So....down, down, down came the droplets.....it was raining!  This water cycle starts all over every day!  We can't see it though....it's too tiny for our eyes....almost invisible!  The kids LOVED the story and were asking all kinds of intelligent questions about Stan and Fran!

Science was the coolest thing of the day!  During drop off, you may have all noticed a distinct smell!  We were practicing our science experiment.....we were actually trying to copy Bill Nye the Science Guy.  The video is below because I'm not sure my explanation will do it justice!



We used plastic bottles to make our own clouds!  Before we started we had a lesson about fire safety.  It's only for grown-ups and it can really hurt you if you're not careful!  After we put a tiny bit of water in our bottle, we lit a match and caught some of the smoke in the bottle.  We put on the top and squeezed the bottle TEN times.  All the kids helped us count!  We could tell that the bottle was getting kinda cloudy.....but when we opened the bottle.....out came several tiny little clouds.  The room exploded with laughing and applause!  The kids thought it was the best thing ever.  They begged us to repeat it FIVE times!
