Learning About Families

Day two and if you walked in to the room, you might think it was day 52!  The kids are forming friendships and learning each other's names.  They are playing together and sharing.  They are transitioning and following the schedule.  I can't believe how well it's going!

Today we had Floam in the Touch and Feel pool.  It's kinda like play-do, kinda like styrofoam, kinda like shaving cream.  To tell you the truth.....I don't know exactly what it is, but it is VERY addictive....mostly because you can't figure it out!  It was much, much calmer and cleaner than yesterday....but just as entertaining!

Outside time was great.  It's always interesting to see which kids head straight for the puddles and which kids avoid them like the plague!  Let's just say we had more than one pair of wet shoes before we left the playground!  While some of our friends were riding bikes, the boys discovered a worm on the ground.  That poor worm spent the next 15 minutes in complete shock!  They passed him around from friend to friend.....they stretched him out....they poked him with a stick.....they watched him curl up and try to crawl away!  We let them explore (and tried to keep the poor animal alive), then encouraged the boys to find a safe place to let the worm go.  They buried him in a pile of mulch up to their knees and told the worm they would find him tomorrow!  Hands down....it was the highlight of the morning!

Our story today was I Like Myself by Karen Beaumont.  It's a great story about no matter what we look like, what happens to us, or what other people say....it's important to like ourselves and be a good friend.  The kids all agreed that we all like each other....even though we look and act different. 


Our language circle was about families.  All of us have different people in our families, but they are the people who love us no matter what.  We practiced some pronouns (daddies and brothers are HE, and mommies and sisters are SHE) and did some counting.  This cute video helped us practice the vocabulary in a song.



Art today was taking little cut-out people (clear representations of our family members!) and putting them all together to make "My Family".  Each child had to find the correct number of boys (big and little) and girls (big and little) and then add themselves.  We went around and labeled each person before we colored.  The kids had some interesting discussions about who was the best in their family and some interesting questions about how come he has more people in his family than me.  Like a good teacher, I encouraged them to talk to you about it when they got home!  You can count on preschool to spice up your dinner conversation!
