A Trip to Harris Teeter

The day began with a small sample of some vegetables in the Touch and Feel.  Peppers, potatoes, tomatoes, and carrots.  They were different colors, different shapes, and different textures.  We had a lot to talk about to start our discussion about vegetables!

Today was our Out and About trip to Harris Teeter to see LOTS of foods that grow!  We spent the morning circle time talking about the rules for the walk and inside the grocery store.  There was a list of fruits and vegetables that we thought we would see to help keep us focused once we got there.

Ms. Corina was a wonderful tour guide today.  She walked us around Harris Teeter showing us all kinds of fruits and vegetables.  Some of them had funny names, and some of them even looked funny.  There was red cabbage, which most definitely was purple, and black bananas, and baby carrots, and avocados.....so many things to see and touch!

After a walk through the produce section, Ms. Corina showed us the dairy products, and then we walked through the frozen foods.  We saw some of the same things in the frozen section that we saw in produce, only it was really cold.  We saw pumpkins, and Halloween candy, and candles, and even movies at the grocery store.

The kids were all really interested and listened so nicely while we were there.  Ms. Corina sent everyone home with a goodie bag full of surprises from Harris Teeter.  They were super excited about taking that home today!

Once we got back to school, we washed hands and got ready for our story.  While the kids were waiting on everyone, they took the initiative for a little rest time.  I fully supported those five minutes of quiet time.....and even thought about joining them!! Who knew a trip to the grocery store could be so tiring!!

Our story was Growing Vegetable Soup by Lois Ehlert.  This is about a family who grows all the ingredients for vegetable soup.  They plant the seeds, water them, make sure they get plenty of sun, keep the weeds out, and finally pick the vegetables.  At the end they cut up all the vegetables and add them to hot water.  Once it's all cooked.....they eat their homemade vegetable soup!! The kids were super quiet during the story.  I want to believe it's because I'm such a great reader and that they were so interested.....but the fact that they were exhausted probably had something to do with it too!!



We had a super fun day at Harris Teeter!  The weather was great and, it even got a little warm on the way back!  Our first official Out and About was a big success!  We look forward to so many more learning experiences with the kids this year!!
