SOOOO Many Apples To Taste

Today started with some sneezes.....we had hay in the Touch and Feel.  All week we have been talking about apples growing on trees....in orchards.....which are kinda like farms......where there is hay!  It was a stretch, but we made the connection!!  The kids loved separating it from the bundle and tossing it into the air.  Amazing.....no bugs in this bundle..... but they were searching!!

We are trying to structure playground time a little  more so that there are more purposeful interactions between the children.  Today we practiced playing Duck, Duck, Goose.  Our kids played together really well.  They encouraged each other and had a great time. When the Weekday friends came out....we were ready!  Not everyone was ready to play in a bigger group and just wanted to watch, but some of our kiddos were telling kids where to sit and who would go first.  It was fun to watch!

Up, Up, Up!  It's Apple-Picking Time by Jody Shapiro is a story about two kids who go to an apple orchard to pick apples with their grandparents.  They have an apple sale and help Grandma make all kinds of sweet treats with the leftover apples.

We made a list of all the things that we can do with apples. Some of the things came from the book and some of the things came from our activities this week.

Our book had some examples of all the different kinds of apples.  They all look different and have different names.  Our video today gave us LOTS of examples.  The kids all agreed that some apples sure do have funny names!!

During science we made predictions about the differences between red, yellow, and green apples.  They were the same size and shape, but definitely different colors.  They all kinda smelled the same....."like apples" the kids said.....but how would they taste???  Each kid got a small piece of each apple to taste and compare.  They came up with some really good descriptive words to tell about the apples, which we turned into a chart.  Learning is always more fun when there is a snack surprise at the end!
