Too Many Pumpkins

Ms. Abby came this morning for a lesson on balance.  We listened to a song and balanced bean bags on all our different body parts.  We had a relay race while we balanced the bean bags on our heads.  Then Ms. Abby had set up a balance beam that we took turns walking across.  At the end of the balance beam was a block that everyone had to stand on and jump down from.  Then we all took five turns on the balance board.  The kids LOVED it!!  They all cheered for each other and even started chanting each other's names in encouragement!!

In today's story Too Many Pumpkins by Linda White, the main character Rebecca Estelle HATES pumpkins!  One day as a pumpkin truck goes by her house, a giant pumpkin falls off the truck and goes SPLAT in her front yard!  She decides to bury it with dirt so she doesn't have to look at it.  Then when a vine starts to grow, she cuts it up and decides to shut the curtains and completely ignore it!  When springtime comes, she finds the whole front yard full of pumpkins! She cooks up some of the pumpkins and turns the rest into jack-o-lanterns.  All her friends come over and she sends each one of them home with a bag of seeds.....and she keeps a small bag for herself!

For science today we wondered what was inside our pumpkin!  We made predictions and then cut it open to find out!  Our "perfect" pumpkin wasn't nearly as ooey and gooey as we expected (or wanted).....in fact.....our pumpkin was kinda dry!

We could have spent two weeks exploring and learning about pumpkins!  The kids really enjoyed this theme....but.....they are out of control excited about our next theme....which they have been waiting on all month.....Halloween!!  Enjoy your long weekend with your kiddos!!
