COLORS!

Today was all about COLORS!  Learning the names of all our colors....reading the color words.....mixing colors......ALL ABOUT COLORS! 

Touch and Feel was colored modeling clay.  The consistency is a little harder to manipulate than regular play-do, so it's really good for exercising those tiny little muscles in our hands.  The kids made all kinds of shapes and letters.  They pretended to make snakes, and ladybugs, and frutis, and people!

During morning circle, we continued our pattern.....and you won't believe this....but only THREE more sleeps until March!  Time is flying by!  We introduced some new letters to our letter chart.  We'll have all of them up there soon!  The kids are always so excited to see what letters we are missing and guessing which ones we might add next!

Ms. Michelle was here today to help us celebrate Dr. Seuss' birthday this week!  We started off with some finger fun building a Cat and a Hat story.  We matched colors (we didn't plan that, but it totally went with our day!) to help illustrate One Fish, Two Fish, Red Fish, Blue Fish.  Once everyone had done that, we used our new patterning skills to complete the pattern on The Cat and The Hat's hat.  Red, white, red, white.....Ms. Michelle couldn't believe how independent they were, but the kids were quick to tell her that we had been practicing patterns each morning.

Then it was time to get our bodies moving......everybody took a few turns in the white tunnel then we settled down for yoga!  Each child had a card and after they demonstrated the move....everyone else took a turn and we held that position while we counted to 10.  It wasn't exactly the same as races outside on the playground, but it was a workout for sure!

The book today was The Crayon Box That Talked by Shane DeRolf.  The story is about a box of crayons that doesn't get along.  Each crayon thinks that it is the most important, prettiest crayon in the box.  When the boy comes along and hears all this arguing, he decides to show the crayons that they are all needed to create a beautiful picture.  At the end, they all appreciate each other because now they realize that they each have special jobs.

 

In preparation for our science, we did some brainstorming about items, fruits, things we know that are always a certain color.  We made a list for yellow, blue, and red.  The kids came up with some great things to add to the list. Then we put on our science hats because we told the kids that those were the only colors we could find.  We needed their help to "make" more colors.  They each selected two colors.  We put them on opposite sides of the paper and mixed them in the middle.  You would have thought it was magic when they saw the "new" color appear.  To finish it off, we added color words and taught the kids to "read" their science.  Red + Yellow = Orange.  Blue + Yellow = Green.  Red + Blue = Purple.  They LOVED it.....and we had all the options represented at our table so everyone got to learn all the possibilites!

The kids may have all known the names of the colors at the start of the day.....but they learned SO much more about colors through all the fun activities today!
