Mary Had a Little Lamb

Ms. Michelle came today! First the kids had to use their muscles to carry heavy presents through an obstacle course. Some of them decided to show off their muscles by trying to carry TWO presents through the course!  Then they each had to lace a string through many small holes. Ms. Michelle continues to help us learn all the letters of the alphabet.  She had all the kids pretend to be detectives for the ABC mystery game. The kids had to identify the letter, put the letter in the correct space and say a word that started with the mystery letter. For the last activity the kids made a valentine. They used their fingers to rip tissue paper into small squares. Then they glued the paper to a heart to make a mosaic. They shared with their friends who was going to get their special valentine.

Our nursery rhyme today was "Mary had a Little Lamb." We read the rhyme together and then the kids each took a turn reading it to the class. In the nursery rhyme, the lamb liked to follow Mary everywhere she went. So...we played follow the leader! Each kid had a turn being the leader (Mary in the story) and the others kids (the little lambs) had to follow the leader's actions. We marched, clapped, stomped, skated, hopped and waddled.

 

For art we made a little lamb with a coat that was white as snow. The kids had to fill in ten small circles with cotton balls. They each counted ten cotton balls to fill up their ten circles. Using a clothes pin they picked up the cotton ball and placed it on the circle. It took a lot of concentration and the kids had to use their finger muscles.  We are learning so much from Ms. Michelle that we find ways to incorporate those fine motor skills into all of our activities!

 

We ended the day with  several different "Mary had a Little Lamb" songs. Some of the versions we found were WAY too fast.....you could barely understand the words.  The kids thought those were funny and the class erupted in laughter!!  They all  took home a copy of the nursery rhyme in their book bag so they can practice reading it at home.
