Touch and Feel was filled with beads and eggs when the kiddos arrived this morning. The kids filled the eggs with the beads and pretended they were maracas. Our pretending skills are getting really good!
During morning circle we talked about the calendar and continued our pattern. The kids requested a new months of the year song, so we found one.....but they promptly declared it a "baby song". So....we won't be listening to that song again!! We also talked about opposites and the children each gave an example of an opposite...hot/cold, up/down, front/back. We also had a song to go with that activity....which, I'm happy to report.....was a success!
Our story today was Jethro Byrd, Fairy Child by Bob Graham. Annabelle's dad has little time for fairies. He is busy working. He tells her she won't find fairies in the cement or the weeds of their backyard. But Annabelle has lots of time, so she keeps looking, even under her baby brother, Sam. And one day she finds what she's looking for: a thumbsize fairy child named Jethro Byrd, whose family has landed in her garde, in a tiny ice-cream truck. What a wonderful chance to invite all the Byrds for tea with Mommy and Daddy! But why, Annabelle wonders — as the fairies fiddle and sing and dance and whistle away among the cake crumbs — are she and Sam the only ones who can see them?
After reading the story, we talked about and made a list of things grown ups can do and things that kids can do. Grown ups work, cook and drive a car. Kids play hide and seek, go to preschool and ride a tricycle.
For art we made little fairies. The kids gave the fairies eyes, a nose and a mouth. They also needed wings so the fairy could fly around. Each child gave their fairy a name. Then they had the tough decision of what magical power to give their fairy. The thinking....and the resulting sharing of these decisions was WAY more fun than the actual art!
